Regional consultation with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources (MECCNAR) is under way at the Council’s conference center in Mansakonko LRR.
The Ministry of Environment is leading the formation of Gambia’s first Climate Change Bill with the support of the West Africa Coastal Area Management (WACA) project.
The MECCNAR is committed in spearheading the participatory process that captures the diverse needs and perspectives of stakeholders at all levels in relation to climate change.
The project Aims to engage decentralized structures with the aim of soliciting input from relevant actors as well as promoting awareness of climate justice.
The Chairman of the Council Mr. Landing B. Sanneh in his opening statement, observed the protocols. He unearthed that the issue of climate change is either you are directly or indirectly affected that climate change is real and it’s has negative impact on human beings. He said partners from the Ministry and key stakeholders will create time to expose to the participants relevant messages about the negative impact of climate change to ensure interactive session.
Chairman Sanneh further advised Representatives to make suggestions as to what law we want to make as far as climate change is concern. He revealed that the Council is taken few local actions which are meant to mitigate climate change which had culminated to the establishment of first ever Green City Initiative in Gambia.
He disclosed that the initiative is an ambitious initiative designed to mitigate the effects of climate change and bring crucial development to our people. He indicated that the initiative has seven (7) components that is addressing some of the priority needs as far as development is concern in the LGA. He said the Council recognized the effect of climate change and has started doing local actions.
